Barlestone Boxers Of The 1930's ii.
Barlestone boxers certainly made news in the 1930's before the War. The most successful family were the Hardy's of Newbold Road. Trained by their father Sam, in a small gym behind their woodyard in Newbold Road, the brothers Bill, Sam and Fred became quite renowned for their pugilistic skills, most successful of all was Bill. On 13th September 1937 he became the Heavy Weight Champion of the Midlands. The highlight of his boxing career was when he fought the British and British Empire Champion, Jack McAvey, at the Granby Halls. Of the one hundred and fifty fights that Bill had from the end of 1933 to 1938 he lost only twenty-nine.
