             In Band At Barlestone Since 1892

Mr William Jordan, Bosworth Road, Barlestone, a member of Barlestone Brass Band for 65 years and the oldest member of the Leicestershire Brass Band Association, has died at the home of his only son, at Nailstone. He was 80 years of age. Well known at band contests in the Midlands as a soloist, Mr Jordan started to play the cornet when 15 years of age, and continued until he was 60, when he turned to the tenor horn. He had arranged to take part in the band contest at Leicester on Easter Monday and was at practice a fortnight ago.

Barlestone Band leading the Infirmary Parade is here seen just turning from Newbold Road into Main Street. The photograph would be taken from the upstairs window of the Central Stores. Note the beautifully decorated horse drawn floats and the crowds of people watching.

Victoria House in Newbold Road, Barlestone. This is reputed to be the house where the band first practiced and from which it took it's name.

        William Jordan 1877-1957.

William Jordan joined Barlestone Village Band at the age of 15 in 1892 when e started to play to cornet. He played this instrument until the age of 60 when he turned to the tenor horn. He was the oldest member of the Leicestershire Brass Band Association and he was at band practice until two weeks before he died.

Late Nineteen Fifties

A summer occasion with the band playing at a garden party at the back of the Rectory at Market Bosworth.

Circa 1926

John Deacon one of the founder members of the Barlestone Band. He started playing in 1888 at the age of twenty and retired from the band in 1933 aged sixty-five.

 

Barlestone Church Parade August Sunday 1931

The parade has just come from the direction of the church. A group of girl guides are at the front and by the window is an ex World War One soldier wearing a medal. The buildings in the background have either been demolished and replaced or as in the case of the house with the archway been extended.
